International Youth Environmental Summit

Schedule of Activities


SUMMIT SCHEDULE

Saturday, September 6

All delegations will arrive at Portland International Airport.

A welcoming committee will meet each delegation at the airport.

Buses will pick up the delegations and their luggage and transport them to Monmouth, Oregon, location of Western Oregon University campus where delegations will live in the resident halls for the week. This is approximately an hour and a half drive and is only about 20 minutes west of Salem.

With the arrival of the delegations to the campus, welcoming committees will present a summit packet of information to the delegates and usher delegations to their dorm rooms. Student delegates will room in pairs, staff coordinators will have single occupancy rooms.

Western Oregon University is a small college 20 miles west of Salem. Their academic year does not begin until late in September, so we will have the entire campus for ourselves.

Once delegations arrive, students and staff will be allowed to relax and explore the campus. Dinner will be served to delegates in the evening.


Sunday, September 7

Breakfast at Western Oregon University

Field Trip to Oregon Coast via bus; tour conducted by local experts.

Leave Monmouth, Oregon at 8:00 AM; arrive at coast at 9:30 AM.

Drive south along coast highway from Lincoln City to Newport. Stops at beaches and tidepools.

10:30 - International Beach Cleanup Activity. Delegates will be placed in multinational groups and collect and record beach debris. Gloves, garbage sacks and   recording sheets will be provided.

11:30 Picnic Lunch.

12:30 Visit Oregon's Marine Science Center in Newport.

View film on marine debris and threat to ocean life.

1:30 - 3:30 Visit Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport.

Return to Monmouth by 5:00 PM.

International Banquet at Western Oregon University 7:00-9:00 PM

This will be a semi-formal meal (nice and neat dress). After the meal, each delegation will be asked to share a creative visual description which demonstrates the efforts each delegation made to get to the Summit. The theme of the presentation will be "The Road to the Summit" It would be nice to try and incorporate slides, music, video, etc. into the presentation. Anything goes here...be creative! It would be nice to have it reflect the culture of your country. Each presentation should be about 10 minutes long.


Monday, September 8

Breakfast at Western Oregon University.

Outdoor education/adventure activities - all day on campus.

These activities are designed to break down the barriers among the delegations and encourage communication, international teamwork, and group problem solving. Students will be broken down into multinational teams; staff coordinators will be asked to assist. Box lunches will be served.

Afternoon - training in legislative procedure to be used in General Assembly

Evening - OPENING NIGHT CEREMONY, Willamette University campus, Salem, Oregon 6:00-9:00 PM

Buses will take delegations to Salem and Willamette University for a Opening Night semi-formal dinner banquet and ceremony.

Willamette University is a beautiful campus right across the street from the State Capitol building in downtown Salem. Although university classes will be in session, facilities for the ceremony are excellent with prime location.

Opening ceremony will include David Brower as a keynote speaker. Video message from South African President Nelson Mandela. In addition, each delegation will give a three minute student speech or presentation. The theme of these Opening Ceremony speeches/presentations will be "Hopes for the Summit".

Return to Western Oregon University for night.

Tuesday, September 9

Breakfast at Western Oregon University

8:00 AM - Buses will take delegations to State Capitol in Salem.

9:00 AM - General Assembly in Senate Legislative Chamber

All 120 delegates present.

Opening remarks: Norma Paulus, Oregon State Superintendent for Public Instruction.

Each delegation is to present their research topic to the General Assembly. These presentations need to be approx. 30 minutes in length. Presentations should focus on the background, causes, and effects of the issue.

Each delegation will also submit their 6 Rights and 6 Responsibilities as they relate to their chosen issue for the Declaration of Environmental Rights and Responsibilities.

A copy of each of the 36 total Environmental Rights and 36 total Environmental Responsibilities will be available for each delegate in their Summit packet. All attempts will be made to have these presented in each of the languages the delegations represent.

** (Note: All delegates are assumed to be knowledgeable on the research topics, rights and responsibilities in advance via research that is to be published by each delegation on the website by August 1st.)

Box lunches on Capitol grounds.

Afternoon - various small multi-national group workshops and committee activities in committee rooms of State Capitol. Debate and voting on Articles for submission to Declaration of Environmental Rights and Responsibilities.

Return to Western Oregon University for barbeque dinner.

Evening entertainment/short field trip - to be announced.

Staff meeting/party at Thompsons Brew Pub in Salem.


Wednesday, September 10

Breakfast at Western Oregon University

Buses transport delegation to State Capitol, Salem

Committee Workshops 8:30 - 10:00 AM

Multimedia presentations by experts on each topic (University Professors or corporate/government officials) on solutions for the issues

Refreshments on Capitol Steps 10:00 - 10:30 AM

Committee Workshops (cont.) 10:30 - 12:00

For each Article proposed in thematic committees, committee members will craft 1-2 solutions that address the article.

Box Lunches on Capitol Lawn 12:00- 1:00 PM

Committee Workshops (cont.) 1:00-2:30 PM

Travel to Portland 2:30-3:30 PM

Sight seeing boat ride on the Willamette River on the Portland Spirit  4:00-5:30 PM.

Dinner at the World Trade Center courtyard 6:00 - 7:30 PM

Thursday, September 11

Travel to State Capitol, Salem 8:00 - 8:30 AM

Finalize development of solutions; present typed copy to staff

Refreshments on Capitol Steps 10:00 - 10:30 AM

Begin legislative process in committees to present, debate, and reach approval of solutions

Computer labs open, display materials provided. Multinational committees create uniform displays of theme, articles, and solutions to their issue.

Friday, September 12

Breakfast at Western Oregon University

Display workshops continue 8:00 - 12:00 on Western campus.

Lunch 12:00 - 1:00 in Dining Hall

Prepare for General Assembly and Closing Ceremony 1:00 - 2:00

Travel to Capitol 2:00 - 2:30

General Assembly 3:00 - 5:00 Senate Chamber of Capitol Building

 Multinational teams will present the results of their committee work to the General Assembly. Each set of solutions crafted by the committee will be reviewed and discussed by the General Assembly and then placed before the Assembly for a vote.

Official adoption of the Declaration of Environmental Rights and Responsibilities will be put to vote in the General Assembly.

Final drafts of the Declaration of Environmental Rights and Responsibilities and the solutions for sustainability displayed.

Evening - CLOSING NIGHT CEREMONY, Willamette University campus, Salem, Oregon 6:00-9:00 PM

The Closing Night banquet and ceremony is semi-formal.

The ceremony will include Adam Werbach,the 24-year-old president of the Sierra Club as a keynote speaker. A video production of the summit week will also be featured.

In addition, each delegation will give a three minute student speech or presentation. The theme of these Closing Ceremony speeches/presentations will be "Reflections of the Summit".

Return to Western Oregon Campus for night.


Saturday, September 13

Breakfast at Western Oregon University.

Return to rooms to pack.

Reforestation Fieldtrip 8:00 - 12:00 AM

Lunch 12:00 - 1:00 PM

Travel to Camp Cascade 1:00 - 3:00 PM

Camp Cascade - remaider of day

Camp Cascade is a large, comfortable, facility nestled in a beautiful woods along the Little Northfork River in the foothills of the Cascade Range about 1.5 hours east of Salem. It includes large cabins with bunks, bedding, and showers. An additional building serves as a conference center and dining room.

Recreational activities include hiking, swimming, basketball, softball, ping pong, and field games of all sorts.

This will be a good day for all the delegates to relax, unwind, and enjoy Oregon's natural beauty and the friends they have made.

Dinner will be served in the camp's dining room.


Sunday, September 14

Breakfast at Camp Cascade.

Short bus trip (30 minutes) to trailhead of Opal Creek Old Growth Forest.

Opal Creek experts will provide guided tours of the Opal Creek watershed and forest. The trail is a smooth dirt road that winds 3 and a half miles back to an old mining town along the beautiful pristine waters of Opal Creek. Picnic lunch will be served at the mining town. Delegates will have the opportunity to explore the old growth forest and swim in the many pools along the creek.

Hike out and return to Camp Cascade for the evening and dinner.

Evening - "Where do we go from here?: Laying the plans for the future"


Monday, September 15

Rise early, pack and leave Camp Cascade by 6:00 AM. Travel by bus to Portland, stopping along the way for a farewell breakfast.

Delegations catch return flights for home countries.


WHAT TO BRING

Each delegation should bring:

* Research on topic

* 6 Rights and 6 Responsibilities for the Declaration of Environmental Rights and Responsibilities that relate to the research topic and reflect sustainability.

* 10 Self-portraits from students at the Portrait Display at the State Capitol for the duration of the summit. - if you need more information on this, please let us know)

* Visual documentation of the "Road to the Summit" (video, slide, music, etc...)

* Prepared 3 minute student speech or presentation for the Opening Ceremony on the theme "Hopes for the Summit"

Each individual delegate and staff coordinator should bring:

* Clothing for warm days (85 F/30 C) and cooler evenings (60 F/15 C)

Clothing should include:

- a couple of semi-formal outfits (dresses or skirts for girls, ties for boys - in some cases, school uniforms would work.)

- comfortable, casual, but nice clothing for daily work at the State Capitol (again, school uniform could work)

- a few changes of clothing for fieldtrips and outdoor activities (jeans,t-shirts, shorts)

- a light jacket or sweater for cooler evenings

- shoes for walking/hiking;

- sandals for fun in the sun and sand

- any personal items for daily hygeine - including a towel and washcloth for Camp Cascade (Western Oregon University will have towels and linens)

- a small amount of currency for gifts/souveniers

- VISAS/Passports
