for the Summit

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE SUMMIT

Congratulations on the selection of your delegation. In preparation for the International Youth Environmental Summit this September, we would like to share some basic requirements each school will need to complete.

There are 3 parts which are critical aspects of the legislative process for the Summit. We respectfully request that you complete and link the following information to your school's homepage BEFORE the 1st of August.

PART #1 - THE RESEARCH

Provided is a uniform framework for researching your selected area of study which should be used by each delegation. Please have your delegation present their research using the following headings:

I.  NAME OF YOUR DELEGATION'S AREA OF STUDY:

II.  HISTORICAL/SCIENTIFIC BACKGROUND OF YOUR AREA OF STUDY

III.  CAUSES WHY YOUR AREA OF STUDY HAS BECOME A GLOBAL ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUE:

IV.  EFFECTS OR IMPACT OF YOUR AREA OF STUDY ON THE NATURAL AND MAN MADE ENVIRONMENTS AS WELL AS HUMAN HEALTH:

V.  PROPOSE AND EXPLAIN SOLUTIONS THAT ADDRESS THE ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS RELATED TO YOUR AREA OF STUDY. MAKE SURE THAT THE SOLUTIONS PROMOTE SUSTAINABILITY AND RESPONSIBILITY FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS.

VI.  LINKS TO APPROPRIATE INTERNET SITES WHERE DELEGATES FROM EACH SCHOOL CAN ACCESS MORE INFORMATION CONCERNING YOUR FIELD OF STUDY.

PART #2 - THE ARTICLES FOR THE DECLARATION OF ENVIRONMENTAL RIGHTS & RESPONSIBILITIES

The Declaration of Environmental Rights and Responsibility will consist of the following three parts:

1) A Preamble

2) The Proclamation of the General Assembly

3) The Articles

The wording for the Preamble and the Proclamation will be finalized at the Summit. The major part of the Declaration will be the Articles. An Article is a Right or Responsibility which the Summit delegates agree must be part of the Declaration. In order to make the Summit process smooth, we would like each school to propose their Articles and upload them BEFORE August 1. For an example of how these Articles should be written, view the Declaration of Human Rights at:

http://www.mds.mdh.se/~dat95jnn/hr/rights2.htm

The Declaration which we create at the Summit will follow this format. Please familiarize yourself with this format.

Based on the research of your delegation, your school must propose 12 total Articles which will make up part of the Declaration of Environmental Rights and Responsibilities. 6 of the Articles must be basic Environmental Rights and the other 6 must be basic Environmental Responsibilities. Your Articles must be based on your area of study.

PART #3 - LINKING YOUR RESEARCH AND ARTICLES TO YOUR HOMEPAGE

As soon as you complete your research and establish your 12 Articles, it is critical that each school link this information to their respective homepage. The idea is that each school create a separate page that provides the following:

A) General information about the Summit

B) Your delegations AREA OF STUDY

C) Your RESEARCH based on the above criteria

D) Your ARTICLES based on the above criteria

E) Any other information you would like to include which may enhance this page.

F) Links to WEBSITES related to your area of study

Once you have completed this page, we will link it from the 21st Century Schoolhouse page so that your AREA OF STUDY, RESEARCH, ARTICLES, RELATED WEBSITES and other information about your delegation that you wish to include will be available to the delegates from the other schools. This will allow all the delegates to prepare for all the issues which will be focused on at the Summit. Again, we respectfully request that this information is made available before the 1st of August.

PART #4 - WHAT WILL BE ACHIEVED WITH THE RESEARCH AND THE ARTICLES AT THE SUMMIT?

As you know from your agenda the legislative process begins on Tuesday September 9 and ends on Friday September 12. During this legislative period you can expect the following:

Tuesday September 9:

Each delegation will present their field of study and their proposed Articles to the General Assembly. (all 120 delegates representing the 21st Century Schoolhouse) The General Assembly will then formally adopt the Articles as an official part of the Declaration.

Wednesday-Thursday September 10-11:

Delegates will break into multinational committees based on the six areas of focus for the Summit. Delegates will work together to craft solutions and create displays that reflect the Articles of the Declaration of Rights and Responsibilities.

Friday, September 12:

Solutions based on the Articles will be presented to the General Assembly. The formal Declaration of Environmental Rights and Responsibilities will be approved by the General Assembly. The General Assembly will formally approve the actual Declaration of Environmental Rights and Responsibilities and adopt the solutions which were crafted by the multinational committees.
