Daimon Summit 2001
Toyama, Japan
July 31 - August 6, 2001

Theme: Living Together
in the New Century

It's been about 4.6 billion years since the earth came into being. Human history is only a tiny fraction of this time. Starting as nothing but a weak animal, mankind has spread its influence around the entire world through the development of high intelligence and use of language. In the meantime, industrialization has emerged and developed at the cost of natural resources, and our relentless pursuit of convenience has brought about a rapid advancement of scientific technology. Today we have arrived at a point where mankind can unravel the origin of the universe and precisely track the evolution of life.
This technological development, however, also causes such problems as environmental destruction and alienation from ourselves. We are forced to look into what we are and where we are heading.

It is unquestionable that we live in a global world. We can fly to any place in the world in less than a day and access anyone in a few seconds by email or telephone. The world economy has erased our borders and allows a tremendous amount of goods to flow between nations. Monetary interactions take place night and day. National interdependence is on the rise.

Is our awareness in step with this drastic transition? It seems that we pay attention only to what is happening around us, not realizing that our community is the whole world. Hearing and seeing tragic things happen overseas, we turn blind eyes because these things are not our business, don't we? The truth is that whatever happens in this world more or less influences other nations. We can't ignore the little things that happen in the corners of our world.

Let's talk to all our neighbors. Mutual communication and cooperation is the key to making our society peaceful and comfortable for everyone to live in. It is our sincerest hope that this summit will be a great success and that humans will continue to exist on the earth.

Characteristics of the Toyama Summit:

  1. The whole school will be involved in it and all the students will take part in it in one way or another.

  2. Not only does the summit bring the participating nations together in search of solutions to environmental problems that are upon us, but also provides opportunities for us to know each other's cultures better and allow us to exchange them.

  3. The increasing use of internet will promote the exchange of ideas beforehand and cooperation among member nations.
